The Industrial Revolution in Japan
Abstract
Japan’s industrial revolution began to take shape in the 1870s, aimed at creating enough economic and military power to keep the nation free from Western encroachments. A host of developments ushered in the new phase, some of them familiar patterns from earlier industrialization processes, others reflecting a distinctive national signature.
