Abstract

This chapter examines the role of physical description as an element of crime pattern identification. Appearance-based details, ranging from basic attributes such as age, sex, race, height, and weight to distinctive features including scars, tattoos, clothing, and accessories, provide investigators with valuable variables for connecting incidents and identifying suspects. While often considered routine elements of crime reporting, detailed and systematic physical descriptions can distinguish one crime series from another, or tie seemingly unrelated offenses together. Case examples demonstrate how consistent details, such as distinctive clothing, hair color, or accessories, can serve as reliable identifiers across multiple incidents. The chapter also addresses the limitations of eyewitness memory, the influence of observation conditions, and the risk of implicit bias in description accuracy. Emerging technologies, including facial recognition and the challenges posed by deepfakes, are considered within the evolving landscape of suspect identification. By emphasizing careful documentation and critical evaluation, this chapter highlights physical description as an essential but nuanced variable in effective pattern recognition.
