Abstract

This chapter examines the element of vehicle description in linking crimes and advancing investigations. Vehicles are used by offenders for transportation, concealment, or as tools in the offense, making accurate description critical. Key variables include make, model, year, color, license plate data, type, modifications, condition, and distinctive features such as bumper stickers or damage. Case studies highlight investigative outcomes: a truck description that broke open the Gilgo Beach serial murder case, the misdirected focus on a white van during the Beltway sniper investigation, and a stolen Kia with a unique bumper sticker leading to arrests in Asheville. The chapter stresses systematic collection, verification, and analysis of vehicle details.
