Abstract

This chapter explores the importance of modus operandi (MO) – the methods offenders use to commit crimes – in linking cases and detecting patterns. While recognized for more than a century as critical to investigations, MO information remains inconsistently recorded, unevenly shared, and often lost to memory rather than preserved in accessible records. Modern systems such as NIBRS, NCIC, LInX, and VICAP provide valuable data but fall short in capturing the detail needed for effective crime pattern recognition. The chapter reviews historical developments, data system limitations, and the consequences of missing MO information for investigators, agencies, and communities. It emphasizes that although some offenders adapt their methods, many retain consistent behaviors that can aid detection. Strengthening the use of MO requires improved not only data capture but also informal information exchange, professional expertise, and emerging analytic tools.
