Commodity Flow and Markets
Abstract
This chapter explores how the analysis of commodity flows – defined as the movement of goods, currency, or services through legitimate and illicit supply chains – provides critical insight into organized crime and transnational offending. By tracing the routes, intermediaries, and market destinations of stolen, counterfeit, or otherwise illicit commodities, investigators can detect patterns that reveal both operational signatures and the structure of criminal networks. Key indicators include repeated use of particular shipping routes or freight companies, consistent concealment or counterfeit techniques, and distinctive financial transfer or laundering practices. Drawing on examples ranging from catalytic-converter theft to counterfeit goods trafficking, the chapter demonstrates how commodity-flow analysis exposes the full lifecycle of criminal transactions: from origin and transport to resale and laundering. It also highlights the interdependence between illegal markets and legitimate economic channels, showing how criminal groups exploit lawful trade to obscure contraband. Understanding these flows not only strengthens individual cases but also enables law enforcement and regulatory agencies to disrupt entire criminal supply chains, inform international cooperation, and build systemic prevention strategies.
