Abstract

This lesson focuses on euphemisms. A euphemism is a figure of speech that substitutes a gentler expression for a statement that may sound harsh, unpleasant, or uncomfortable. This lesson consists of two class periods. On day 1, students will learn key information about euphemisms, explore examples of them, analyze a published example of this concept, and consider the effect euphemism use can have on a piece of writing. On day 2, students will review important ideas about euphemisms, apply the concept to their writing, and reflect on the impact of the euphemisms on their work. The instructional process concludes with students answering an exit question about how they will use euphemisms in their future writing. The lesson's objectives are: students will understand the concept of euphemisms; students will understand why euphemisms are important tools for strong writing; and students will be able to use euphemisms in their writing and reflect on the significance of doing so.
