Abstract

This lesson addresses the concept of hyperbole, a figure of speech in which a statement is intentionally exaggerated to make a point. The lesson spans two class periods. On day 1, students will learn key information about hyperbole, see examples of it, examine how writers use the concept, and consider the significance of hyperbole in writing. On day 2, students will review important points about hyperbole, use this concept in their writing, and reflect on the significance of incorporating hyperbole in their works. The instructional process concludes with students answering an exit question about how they will use hyperbole in their future writing. The lesson's objectives are: students will understand the concept of hyperbole; students will understand why hyperbole is an important tool for strong writing; and students will be able to use hyperbole in their writing and reflect on the significance of doing so.
