Providing Detail
Abstract
This lesson focuses on prepositional phrases, which are phrases that begin with a preposition and end with a noun or pronoun that is the object of the preposition; they provide detail and description to a piece of writing. The lesson spans two class periods. On day one, students will learn key information about prepositional phrases, see examples of them, examine how writers use this concept, and consider how prepositional phrases can impact a piece of writing. On day two, students will review important ideas about prepositional phrases, use this concept in their own writing, and reflect on the concept's importance to the pieces they wrote. The lesson sequence concludes with students answering an exit question about how they will use prepositional phrases in their future writing. The lesson's objectives are: students will understand the concept of prepositional phrases; students will understand the importance of prepositional phrases to strong writing; and students will be able to use prepositional phrases in their writing and reflect on the importance of doing so.
