Abstract

This lesson focuses on the grammatical concept of relative clauses, which are dependent clauses that begin with relative pronouns or relative adverbs and provide descriptive information about nouns or pronouns. The lesson spans two class periods. On day 1, students will learn what relative clauses are, see examples of them, consider how writers use them, and think about how relative clauses can impact a piece of writing. On day 2, students will review key information about relative clauses, use relative clauses in their writing, and reflect on how this concept impacts their written work. At the conclusion of the lesson sequence, students will answer an exit question about how they will use relative clauses in their future writing. The lesson's objectives are: students will understand the concept of relative clauses; students will understand the importance of relative clauses to strong writing; and students will be able to use relative clauses in their writing and reflect on the significance of doing so.
