Abstract

This chapter is a reassessment of the admittedly sparse—and often unreliable—fragmentary evidence for Critolaus’ views on two related issues: The nature of god and the scope of god’s providence or foreknowledge ( pronoia ). After an examination of the few brief fragments on the composition of soul and god, the question considered is whether Critolaus held that god’s providence was limited to the celestial realm or penetrated into the sublunary world. It is argued that the evidence offers a bit more support for what has been called the “No Sublunary Providence” view, though any conclusions about this fall short of certainty.
