The Falklands War
Abstract
On 2 April 1982 Argentine forces invaded the Falklands to the consternation of British and world opinion. At a stroke British politics were transformed. For the next three months British politics were the Falklands crisis, all other issues being virtually swept from the attention of the media and Parliament. Even the normal workings of Whitehall were dislocated, as a permanent secretary confided to Tam Dalyell: ‘it was just not possible to get the concentration of senior Ministers on matters other than the South Atlantic. As far as reaching decisions on other matters was concerned, Whitehall virtually seized up’. 1
