The rise and fall of the Civil Service Department
Abstract
When we think of decision-making we tend to think of policy areas where politicians are trying to affect or control society. Yet as we saw in our general discussions, the way in which government operates and is organised can play a major role in determining the nature of decision-making. In this chapter we want to turn the spotlight inside government itself: to the dispositions which politicians have made concerning the organisation of central government itself. In particular we will concentrate on the fortunes of one department, the Civil Service Department, which became an early victim of the Thatcher Government.
