Legislating for trade unions
Abstract
The 1964-70 Wilson Government tried and failed to introduce legislation to curb the power of trade unions; its successor, the 1970-4 Heath Government, was no more effective in its attempt to impose similar restrictions on organised labour. Only with the election of the Thatcher administration in 1979 has a post-war British government successfully carried through its policies for the reform of trade unions. How one government succeeded where others had failed is the subject of this chapter.
