Abstract

Although the formal education system is in the middle of a period of considerable change, teachers, while beset by a complexity of educational initiatives, changing courses and examinations, pre-vocational training etc., are still for the most part teaching subject-based syllabuses in traditional ways. The profession is also struggling with its own identity, its professionalism and the endless saga of trying to achieve parity of pay with other professions. If one adds to this the influence of the new technologies we meet in every aspect of our lives, the new methods, media and techniques that can and are being applied to education, the needs for adult training and retraining, the interest that many organisations are showing in their own educational needs, one begins to get some idea of the complexity of the present situation. These facts in themselves constitute pressures which would daunt any normal profession.
