Abstract

This chapter explores the case of Nathan, whose disengagement from school resulted from a prolonged history of suspensions. It investigates the impact of suspensions and zero-tolerance policies, particularly those that conflict with established school codes of conduct, on student well-being and development. The chapter examines how the presumption of guilt and repeated exclusionary practices can isolate students who exhibit maladaptive behaviors, depriving them of opportunities to learn self-regulation within the school environment. Additionally, it reviews the legal framework and historical evolution of suspensions in the United States, highlighting their broader implications. The chapter emphasizes the profound academic and social costs of exclusionary discipline, demonstrating how these practices can hinder students’ future educational success and engagement within the school community.
