Successful Outcomes on Their Own Terms
Abstract
The concluding chapter synthesizes the central themes explored throughout this book, emphasizing the emotional, relational, and systemic dimensions of school avoidance. Across the five student cases, a common thread emerges: disengagement from school is rarely an act of defiance, but rather a reflection of disrupted attachment, emotional distress, or unmet psychological needs. The chapter underscores the importance of reframing school avoidance through a relational and developmental lens—one that prioritizes belonging, trust, and emotional safety over compliance and punishment. By integrating insights from attachment theory, social-emotional learning, and trauma-informed practices, the chapter advocates for a more compassionate and collaborative approach to student reengagement. Ultimately, it calls on educators, families, and policymakers to create school environments that nurture connection, autonomy, and resilience, ensuring that every student feels seen, valued, and supported within their school community.
