Rorschach Performance of Patients with Specific Neurocognitive and Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Abstract
This chapter reviews empirical research on Rorschach findings in various neurocognitive conditions, focusing on how response patterns reflect underlying brain dysfunction. Drawing on studies using the Comprehensive System and the Rorschach Performance Assessment System, the chapter highlights key variables such as perceptual-cognitive simplification, perceptual inaccuracy, and disordered thinking. It presents findings for dementia of the Alzheimer's type, dementia with Lewy bodies, Polycystic lipomembranous osteodysplasia with sclerosing leukoencephalopathy, traumatic brain injury, unilateral brain dysfunction (hemispheric asymmetry), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, Parkinson's disease, and intellectual disability. For each, the chapter summarizes characteristic Rorschach patterns and discusses their neuropsychological implications. Special attention is given to variables such as Lambda , the Coping Deficit Index, and the Perceptual-Thinking Index as tools for identifying cognitive and emotional dysregulation in neuropsychologically impaired populations. The chapter offers clinical psychologists and neuropsychologists an evidence-based framework for integrating Rorschach data into the assessment of neuropsychological impairment, as well as for supporting differential diagnosis and treatment planning.
