Abstract

In this chapter the author focuses on the challenges in understanding Korea – China economic relations, with a view to formulating harmonious relations as between the two countries. Such an approach has involved considering the perspectives of both countries toward each other. The context of the chapter is set against the geopolitical framework that Korean economic relations are located in, as a middle power between the US and China. The analyses of the relationship are based on a reflection of the considerations that touch on what ought to be the relationship between Korea and China – given in particular their location as neighbors. On the other hand, the “is” status of the relationship is captured in the economic, legal, and historical reality that has in practice informed the development of the relationship. Finally, there is a specific focus on the national security facet of the particular geopolitical economy that Korea currently is affiliating through its Chip 4 Alliance.
