Abstract

Maritime contacts in the Vedic period can be constructed on the basis of literary evidences. Archaeologically, it is difficult to prove trade contacts except for a few stray evidences in India and abroad. Indian literature is very rich and extensive. Although most of the literature is of religious nature, there are evidences of the knowledge of seafaring, maritime commerce or sea trade in the Vedic and the Mauryan periods.
