Abstract

The academic fields of communication, culture, and media are relatively open (indeed, undisciplined), but they are occupied by existing knowledge systems. Finding your way around is not straightforward. Neighbouring districts may be in conflict. Some sites are fenced off and secretive. A favourite landmark may be lost in piles of rubbish. An A-to-Z guide may be helpful. It can be followed at will from any entry point, using busy thoroughfares, unexpected intersections, and paths not often trodden. As you navigate the pathways, you will become astute in ‘reading the country’ ( Benterrak et al., 1984 ; Morrissey and Healy, 2019 ).
