Abstract

This chapter explores the critical resources that underpin the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to sustainable development. It highlights data as the foundational resource, essential for training AI systems to address complex environmental, social, and economic challenges. The chapter examines the importance of accessible, high-quality, and ethically sourced data, alongside open-data initiatives that enable inclusivity and global participation. Equally vital is computational infrastructure, which forms the backbone of AI innovation. Advanced hardware, cloud computing, and scalable platforms are necessary to process large datasets and run sophisticated models that drive sustainable solutions. Complementing technological capacity, human expertise, and continuous capacity-building are emphasized as indispensable for developing, managing, and applying AI responsibly. Training programs, interdisciplinary education, and skills development are highlighted as pathways to empower diverse stakeholders. The chapter also underscores the role of collaborative platforms and partnerships, bringing together governments, private sectors, academia, and civil society to pool knowledge, share resources, and co-create AI-driven sustainability initiatives. Finally, it stresses the significance of policy and ethical guidelines to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability in AI use. Collectively, these resources form the foundation for leveraging AI as a transformative force for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
