Abstract

This chapter examines the pivotal role of artificial intelligence (AI) in promoting sustainability, enhancing resource efficiency, and driving innovation across social, economic, and environmental domains. AI is presented as a transformative tool for optimizing resource use, improving decision-making, and informing policy development, enabling systemic change and global collaboration. The chapter explores key sectors, including agriculture, climate management, healthcare, energy, urban development, and education, illustrating AI’s capacity to support sustainable practices and equitable growth. In agriculture, AI-driven precision farming, predictive modeling, pest and disease control, and food waste reduction are shown to enhance productivity while minimizing environmental impact. Climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies leverage AI for climate modeling, energy efficiency, carbon footprint reduction, and smart urban planning. Healthcare applications include disease prediction, telemedicine, mental health support, and the strengthening of public health systems. AI also facilitates the integration of renewable energy, smart grid management, water conservation, and sustainable urban infrastructure. The chapter further discusses biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management, and the role of AI in species monitoring and habitat preservation. Education and capacity building are highlighted through e-learning platforms and skills development programs, while economic growth and financial inclusion are addressed via microfinance and sustainable business models. Challenges and ethical considerations, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, and equitable access, are critically analyzed. By integrating AI technologies across multiple sectors, the chapter demonstrates how AI can accelerate sustainability, enhance well-being, and foster resilient, inclusive, and environmentally responsible systems, ultimately serving as a catalyst for achieving global sustainability goals.
