The Future of AI in Sustainable Development
Abstract
This chapter explores emerging trends in artificial intelligence (AI) and their transformative potential to advance sustainability and achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. AI is increasingly recognized as a catalyst for systemic change, with applications ranging from climate modeling and precision agriculture to renewable energy integration, biodiversity conservation, and social equity. By enabling predictive insights, optimized resource management, and enhanced decision-making, AI is redefining pathways to address complex environmental and social challenges. The chapter highlights AI’s role in accelerating progress across multiple SDGs, including climate action (SDG 13), poverty alleviation and hunger reduction (SDGs 1 and 2), health and well-being (SDG 3), education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), and sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11). It further examines how AI supports the circular economy by promoting resource efficiency, product life extension, remanufacturing, and circular supply chains. These innovations not only reduce waste and environmental impact but also establish a long-term vision of AI as a driver of global environmental stewardship. Additionally, the chapter examines AI-driven innovations for climate change adaptation, ecosystem protection, sustainable agriculture, water management, and urbanization. Beyond environmental domains, AI is shaping healthcare, social well-being, and the future of work, offering both opportunities for job creation and challenges related to automation. Ethical considerations and governance frameworks are emphasized as critical to ensuring equitable and responsible deployment. By examining these emerging trends, the chapter underscores AI’s potential as both a technological and societal force in shaping a sustainable and inclusive future for humanity and the planet.
