Abstract

This chapter presents a diverse range of case studies showcasing the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in advancing sustainable development at global, national, corporate, and community levels. It begins with an overview of large-scale global AI initiatives aimed at addressing climate change, improving resource efficiency, and conserving biodiversity, illustrating how international collaboration fosters innovative sustainability solutions. Country-specific case studies highlight contrasting experiences between developed and developing regions. In developed countries, AI applications are driving climate modeling, renewable energy optimization, and sustainable resource management. In developing countries, AI is being applied to pressing challenges such as food security, water resource management, and healthcare delivery, demonstrating its potential to bridge infrastructure and capacity gaps. The chapter also explores the role of corporate partnerships, where AI is integrated into corporate social responsibility strategies to promote sustainable business models and circular economy practices. These efforts underscore the private sector’s growing responsibility in aligning with global sustainability goals. Community-based AI projects further illustrate localized solutions, from improving healthcare access and education to enhancing environmental conservation and resource management, ensuring inclusiveness and equity in AI-driven development. By analyzing AI’s contributions to supply chain optimization, social impact, education, and equity, the chapter highlights how technology can be both a driver of systemic change and a tool for empowering communities. The discussion also addresses key challenges, including ethical risks, accessibility issues, and governance gaps while emphasizing opportunities for scaling successful models. Together, these case studies offer practical insights into how AI can be harnessed for transformative, equitable, and sustainable development worldwide.
