Abstract

Where does project management go from here? If the extraordinary rate of failure in complex projects continues, project management may itself become a myth as organisations decide that a practice dedicated to their delivery is redundant. General management may be left with the task of delivery within their own domains. Whilst this is unlikely, the problem remains that project management has an urgent need to justify itself. It must do this by reconsidering what the practice of project management is and embracing phronesis rather than episteme or techne . Project managers must master the use of language in navigating the power structures of the modern organisation to achieve organisational objectives, in the same way the international diplomat pursues their aims in international affairs. Building the world is a noble profession, one worthy of a practice equal to the task.
