Abstract

The fourth chapter reflects on the lessons learned from the analysis of Jihadist terrorism and, more generally, Islamist militancy in Africa and identifies gaps in the current understanding of the phenomenon. It proposes a theoretical sketch centered on an interpretation of layered results and the ultimate goal that Islamist militants seek to achieve by resorting to terrorist tactics. The chapter discusses key strategies and tools for reducing terrorism, the challenges in identifying perpetrators, the limitations of military responses, and the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses the underlying social, economic, and political conditions that give rise to terrorism. It also highlights the importance of regional cooperation and the role of subregional organizations like ECOWAS in counterterrorism efforts.
