Exploring Community Education and Lifelong Learning for a Post-Pandemic World
Abstract
Lifelong learning (LLL) has been an integral part of Indian culture since the existence of humankind. It is rooted in the religious, sociological, and spiritual context of India. Community education plays a foundational role in promoting lifelong learning opportunities for community members to help meet community needs together. This process helps citizens understand their roles and keep learning and giving all their lives. Economic development and rapid urbanisation have begun to change the profiles and learning needs of communities and adults in India. Skill development and livelihood are getting more attention. As a part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the world must “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030. It also seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” in India's National Education Policy 2020. Towards this end, it recently launched an “Adult Learning & Education” (ALE) programme. The impact of the pandemic on learning, both formal and nonformal, has been especially severe in poor, rural communities. The Indian government has been working hard to expand the scope, outreach, and impact of LLL. Since the pandemic, many of these community education efforts have made use of innovative pedagogical and learning methods, including hybrid forms. This chapter will briefly describe recent government LLL and community education policies. It will present case studies of innovative field-based educational efforts to enhance the inclusion of marginalised populations and communities. It will give us innovative pedagogical tools and methods, especially post-COVID-19. Finally, this chapter will end with practical suggestions for expanding community education and LLL impact in India.
