Abstract

While the Mediterranean was polarized as never before with the Six-Day War, France used this event to establish itself as a reliable alternative to the two Great Powers among non-aligned countries such as Yugoslavia and most of the Arab countries of the Middle East. This enabled France to regain considerable credibility in the region, as well as a clientele of prime importance. In reality, the French position aimed to defend Western interests in the Mediterranean at all costs.
