Abstract

‘Planner-bashing’ has been one of Britain’s few growth industries in recent years. The golden age, in which the planners of the new Jerusalem achieved an exalted status, was short-lived. Accusations of bureaucratic interference were bolstered by waves of popular discontent, as the refashioned city of late capitalism began to emerge from the comprehensive development areas. Given this turbulence, a monumental self-esteem would have been necessary to prevent planners under-taking some reassessment of the nature and content of their practice.
