Abstract

In the old days, when there were housemaids, one rule predominated — they had to know their place. From the figurative place a housemaid occupied in the social pyramid everything else could be deduced — her literal place, for example, in the kitchen during the day and in the attic at night; the language she could and couldn’t use in front of her mistress and the guests; and that she was to take her master’s coat when he came home.
