Baubo or Bacchante?
Abstract
‘We no longer believe that truth remains truth when we remove its veils; we have lived long enough to still believe that. Nowadays, it is an accepted matter not to want to see everything naked, not to want to get into everything, and not to want to understand and ‘to know’ everything. ‘Is it true that the Lord God is everywhere?’ the girl asks her mother, ‘but I think that is very wrong.’ A tip for philosophers. We should honour shame (chastity) much more behind which nature keeps hidden her mysteries and myriad uncertainties. Perhaps truth is a woman, who has reasons for keeping her reasons to herself. Perhaps her name is, to use Greek once more, Baubo . . . ?’ 1
