The Young, Intelligent Woman
Abstract
From the time women were admitted to universities, it appeared that studying presented women with specific problems. How did the new life as a student relate to the old life as protected and dependent daughter and especially to the future life as wife and mother? In 1915, Annie Salomons published an autobiographical novel on this problem under the pseudonym Ada Gerlo. Herinneringen van een onafhankelijke vrouw (Memoirs of an Independent Woman) describes the dualism of an educated woman’s life at the beginning of this century.
