Abstract

Hunter-gatherer adaptations in Czechoslovakia during the Upper Pleniglacial reflected both geographic and climatic differences extant through time and across space. The central part of Czechoslovakia, Moravia, contains the greatest number of Upper Palaeolithic sites ( Fig. 10.1 ). This region, which forms a northeast-southwest corridor between the North European Plain and the valley of the Danube, was densely settled by Aurignacian and Pavlovian populations during the mild climatic conditions of the Würm Interplenigla-cial. It was, however, probably less attractive to human groups during the maximal glacial advance when the Fennoscandian ice sheet expanded to about 300 km north of Moravia.
