Abstract

Attempting to outline the prehistory of even a very small part of the world inhabited 18000 years ago is an enormous undertaking. Especially in the past decade, great strides have been made in our knowledge, not only of the past itself but also of the kinds of information we need to have to be able to increase our understanding. Many new studies have been carried out, and often these have entailed detailed and closely reasoned lines of argument in order to sustain research conclusions. Thus, it would be presumptuous at best, and certainly misleading, to try to synthesize all of a region’s prehistory in a chapter as short as this one.
