Abstract

The major rivers of the Murray–Darling system, the Murray, Murrumbidgee, Lachlan, and Darling rivers, flow through the southern part of the Murray Basin and experience similar local conditions ( Fig. 15.1 ). Their headwaters, however, are situated in different parts of the Eastern Divide, which follows a south to north arc along the coastal hinterland of eastern Australia. Variations in environmental conditions along this divide are sufficient to produce differences in the seasonal flow regimes and discharges of these inland-flowing rivers.
