Integrating EON XR into English Language Pedagogy
Abstract
The integration of Extended Reality (XR) technologies in English Language Teaching (ELT) offers new pathways for immersive, context-rich learning. At Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), where English is compulsory, the implementation of EON XR presents an opportunity to enhance engagement, communicative competence, and material interactivity. Grounded in constructivist and experiential learning theories, this study critically examines the pedagogical value and institutional challenges of incorporating EON XR into ELT materials and instruction. While the platform enables interactive simulations and virtual tasks that extend beyond traditional textbook resources, the integration process is shaped by issues of faculty readiness, infrastructure limitations, and access equity. Despite securing 5,000 licenses, UiTM's implementation highlights the importance of continuous faculty training, inclusive design, and strategic planning. This study also explores the potential of XR to support global ELT contexts, proposing that adaptable and research-informed XR integration can complement conventional materials with authentic, student-centred resources. The findings advocate for the development of scalable models and long-term evaluation frameworks to measure learning outcomes and address implementation gaps. By positioning technology as a pedagogical tool rather than a novelty, UiTM's case offers insights for institutions aiming to develop sustainable, immersive ELT ecosystems grounded in effective content creation and digital innovation.
