Navigating Lecturer's Challenges and Strategies in Implementing EMI in Psychology Study Programme
Abstract
This chapter delves into the dynamics of implementing English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI) in an international class within a Psychology study programme at a private Indonesian university. Employing a narrative inquiry methodology, this study investigates the challenges faced by a psychology lecturer when adopting and adapting English-written materials in an international class, and examines the adaptive strategies to address the challenges. The data were collected through in-depth interviews and analysed using the thematic analysis technique. The results revealed three main challenges in the EMI implementation, including lack of collaboration, difficulty in adopting and adapting teaching materials, and students’ limited reading skills. The lecturer employed two strategies to address these challenges, namely employing from various materials and using more diverse teaching techniques. The yielded results are expected to contribute to a deeper comprehension of the pedagogical implication of the English-written materials in EMI classes in Indonesia. Moreover, this research offers practical recommendations for creating a supportive learning environment in an international class in tertiary education.
