Abstract

The application of the cognitive method involves the administration, to the individual members of a subject sample, of a series of experiments which embody the task and factor variations considered to be relevant to an investigation of the processing model which is being used as a framework for the research. For present purposes, an ‘experiment’ will be defined as an episode in which a task instruction is given and a series of displays is presented under conditions which permit the timing of reactions and the recording of the accuracy and characteristics of the responses.
