Abstract

In the introductory chapters to this monograph I argued that ‘dyslexia’, defined as a disability affecting the acquisition of basic reading and spelling skills, would benefit from an analysis based on the application of a cognitive experimental method. This method involved (1) the formulation of a functional model of basic reading processes, (2) the construction of a set of tasks and factor variations which were calculated to provide information about the component processes specified in the model, and (3) the application of the experimental procedure to the individual members of a subject sample.
