Abstract

As we become fluent at speaking and reading so we gain access to the accumulated body of learning contained within our culture. We learn from experience but our experiences need not be confined to our current circumstances; we can also learn vicariously from the experiences of others through being told about what they have seen and done. In consequence, a significant proportion of our knowledge is acquired indirectly through discourse with others, including the reading of texts whose authors may have long since left the scene.
