Abstract

In the course of a lifetime, each of us will acquire a large and diverse repertoire of knowledge about the properties of the world in which we live—the products of mental processes that commenced their work at birth (or before) and then just kept on going and expanding. During a typical day, we will have been called upon to recognise countless objects, people, and places; to participate in numerous conversations; to work any variety of tools and machines; to engage in subtly varied forms of social interaction; to take decisions; solve problems and, all the while, to learn something new from each transaction. It is the same the next day and the day after that.
