Abstract

At first glance, it may seem that propositional coding would not provide a suitable medium for handling such information as the spatial arrangements of visual scenes. In fact, appearances apart, this need not be the case. Our memory, say, for the spatial locations of British counties need not call upon a visual image of a map of the UK—it could take the form of the propositional format depicted in Fig. 3.1 , albeit in a less abbreviated version.
