Abstract

Although claims for the neurological sophistication of the cognitive models subsumed under the banner of connectionism can be overplayed—some of these models show all the neural inspiration of a phrenological bust—theoretical deference to the neural organisation of the brain has been seen as the main factor in promoting subsymbolic models of cognition. Accompanying this shift to a subsymbolic level, we find a number of operating characteristics that are markedly different from those we have considered so far.
