Abstract

Culture is “the sum of the experiences, values, beliefs, ideals, judgments, and attitudes that shape and give continuous form to each individual” ( Royeen & Crabtree, 2006 , p. 3). Part of health care professional training and continuing competence is the pursuit of knowledge about patients’ various cultures. Whether defined or prioritized as cultural competence, sensitivity, or humility, this applied knowledge leads to better communication and health outcomes for patients. Providers can increase their cultural knowledge through curiosity, humility, a habit of listening, and lifelong learning. This chapter discusses culture-related terms, selected previously published models of cultural analysis, and a wealth of case examples for readers to apply their knowledge to common situations in therapy.
