Abstract

Physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) are likely to see patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders at some point in their careers, despite the low prevalence of such conditions. Schizophrenia and related conditions have an extremely high burden of disease on patients themselves, health care systems, and societies. This chapter discusses etiologies of these disorders, including genetic and environmental factors. It overviews signs, symptoms, and complications that contribute to movement system impairments, psychosocial difficulties, and elevated risk of death in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Finally, the chapter identifies evidence-supported physical activity interventions, including supervised, group-based care, that are most likely to be helpful.
