Abstract

Mood disorders that include clinical or subclinical depression along with one or more manic phases are on the bipolar spectrum. These disorders are classified in the DSM-5 as bipolar disorder (including types I and II from a previous classification) and cyclothymic disorder. This chapter discusses differences in physical therapy management of bipolar disorders versus depressive disorders ( Chapter 9 ). While limited literature specifically addresses bipolar disorders in the context of physical therapy, some information is available. This chapter discusses manic symptoms and signs, common side effects of antipsychotic medications used to address mania, the prevalence of co-occurring substance use disorders in patients with bipolar disorder, and the increased suicide risk and other psychosocial concerns in these patients.
