Power
Abstract
Given the continued relevance of the hylomorphic theory in several contemporary philosophical debates, it is unsurprising that some philosophers have sought to replace the notion of structure with alternative conceptions of formal aspect. In particular, many metaphysicians have been drawn to integrating the core tenets of hylomorphism with an ontology of powers, thereby enduring a more dynamic causal role of the unifying principle. In this chapter, I follow certain power-based theorists who remain committed to hylomorphism, examining the soundness of their arguments and reconsidering the issue of how a rich array of powers, dispositions, and potentialities can be integrated into a general hylomorphic framework.
