Abstract

While there are specific approaches to single-session therapy (e.g. solution-focused, narrative and CBT), in my view, these approaches are best used to inform some of the work done by therapists in SST rather than constitute ways of working where the client has to fit into the approach (see Chapters 32 and 33 ). One of the main reasons that I am not a fan of specific approaches to SST, even though I have written a book on what I call ‘Single-Session Integrated CBT’ ( Dryden, 2022a ), 1 is that clients want different forms of help from SST that cannot be catered for by a single approach. Thus, a solution-focused approach, as the title suggests, is designed to help people seeking solutions to problems. While some see SST as a problem-solving therapy, and in reality, most clients do come to SST wanting help with solving emotional or behavioural problems with which they are stuck ( Dryden, 2025b ), this is not the case for all clients. Such clients will need a different approach to the other types of help that they seek.
