Abstract

When your client wants to discuss a specific issue then it is vital for you to keep in mind the following. You need to understand the issue, encourage your client to set a realistic goal that they can achieve by the end of the session and agree to focus on that problem/goal for the rest of the session. When you do this, it is easy for you to think that you have established a working structure for the session, and in most cases, you have. However, there may be times during the session when the client may decide they would rather discuss something else, and you should keep in mind that this is a possibility. Given this, it is also important to keep in mind that you need to check with your client periodically during the session that they are discussing what they want to discuss and if not, you need to agree on a shift of focus with them.
