Keep in Mind That It Is OK if the Client Chooses to Seek Further Help and It Is OK if They Don't
Abstract
Therapists who are guided by the conventional therapy mindset tend to view clients deciding not to have further therapy sessions in a negative light. Terms such as ‘dropping out of therapy’ or ‘premature termination’ are used to describe such instances. Here the therapist thinks they have failed in some way, either to engage the client sufficiently or to help the client effectively even if they have properly engaged with them. Conversely, single-session therapists tend to view clients wanting more help after the single session as their failure to help them to achieve their goal.
